- Must currently hold an ongoing position at a university or college in Africa.
- Must have support from the home institution, demonstrated through a recommendation from a Head of Department, Dean or Vice Chancellor.
- Must be able to reside in Ann Arbor for five months.
- Previous UMAPS recipients are not eligible.
- Preference is given to applicants without extensive international experience outside Africa.
- Applicants must propose research or academic work that can benefit from collaboration with a U-M faculty member.
