About this opportunity
The Human Rights Essay Award is an annual international legal writing competition organized by American University's Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. For 2027, applicants must submit an unpublished legal essay addressing “Democracy, Human Rights and Participation.” The best English and Spanish essays each receive a full-tuition scholarship to American University's Program of Advanced Studies on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.
Requirements
- Must hold a law degree such as J.D., LL.B., LL.M., S.J.D., or equivalent.
- Must have demonstrated experience or interest in international human rights law.
- Must submit an original, unpublished legal essay.
- Essay must directly address the 2027 theme: Democracy, Human Rights and Participation.
- Essay may be written in English or Spanish.
- Essay must not exceed 35 pages, including footnotes.
- Must use appropriate legal citations and extensive research.
- Must submit a CV/resume of no more than 3 pages.
